Brazil - National Order of the Southern Cross, Officer Grade "Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul"
Republic Era | Officer Class with Rosette | Original MedalHistorical Background:
The Order of the Southern Cross (Ordem do Cruzeiro do Sul) is Brazil’s highest national order awarded to foreigners and is one of the most prestigious Brazilian honors. Originally established as the Imperial Order of the Southern Cross in 1822 by Emperor Dom Pedro I to commemorate Brazil's independence, it was reformed in 1932 by President Getúlio Vargas as a national order under the republic.
This modern form, the National Order of the Southern Cross, recognizes notable services rendered to Brazil by foreign nationals, including heads of state, diplomats, military leaders, scientists, and artists. It remains in use today and is often conferred during official state visits.
